Magnolia from seed?

by Joy Stanton

I have lived with my big Magnolia tree for 20 years but it is only in the last few weeks that I have discovered that it can produce weird shaped seed pods containing bright red seeds!

I was so interested in this and wondered if other Hardy Planters had discovered Magnolia seed pods in their gardens and, just as important, if they had any experience of trying to germinate the seeds?

  1. I am also trying to germinate some magnolia seeds given to me by a neighbour. We looked up online how to germinate them. First you have to scrape off the red waxy coating. I did this by rubbing them with kitchen roll. Then wash in a solution with some washing up liquid. Then put in a plastic container mixed in with some damp moss or open substrate. Put in the bottom of the fridge . Supposed to check them every month and rub off any mould on the seeds. I have to admit you have only just reminded me. I haven’t done that yet ! Supposed to germinate in the spring when I suppose you pot them up. Sorry I don’t know the species of mine the donor had forgotten. It would be interesting to know if you have any success.
